Vaginal discharge can start around puberty, sometimes up to six months before your first period. It’s a normal and healthy part of your body’s self-cleaning system—but many people have questions about what’s typical and what might signal a problem. Let’s break it down in simple terms.
What Is Vaginal Discharge?
Discharge is fluid produced by glands in the cervix and vagina. Its job is to wash away dead cells and debris, helping keep your vagina clean and healthy. Think of it as your own personal cleaning service—working quietly in the background so you don’t have to worry.
Throughout your cycle, discharge naturally changes in color, consistency, and amount. Understanding these changes can help you know what’s normal for your body.

What to Expect During Your Cycle
-
Before Ovulation: As estrogen rises, discharge increases and becomes more transparent or egg-white-like. It might feel slightly sticky or stretchy. This type of discharge actually helps sperm survive, increasing the chances of fertilization.
-
After Ovulation: Discharge may decrease slightly as progesterone rises.
-
Before Your Period: Discharge can take on a pinkish hue, also called spotting.
-
During Your Period: Your discharge will be red and bloody as the uterine lining sheds.
-
After Your Period: Most people notice less discharge, though everyone’s cycle is unique.
Other factors like pregnancy, menopause, or hormonal fluctuations can also affect discharge. Vaginal dryness is common when estrogen drops, and a change in discharge can sometimes signal an infection or other health concern.
When to Watch Out
While some variation in discharge is normal, certain changes may require medical attention:
-
Thick, white, or cottage-cheese-like: Often associated with yeast infections, usually paired with itching and irritation.
-
Green or dark yellow: Can indicate an infection, including STIs.
-
Grey: May signal Bacterial Vaginosis, often with a fishy odor.
If you notice these symptoms, speak with your doctor promptly. Early treatment can prevent complications.
Tips for Healthy Discharge
Avoid douching. Your vagina’s natural discharge acts as a self-cleaning system. Douching can disrupt the balance of good bacteria, allowing harmful bacteria to take over and cause infections. Even using water alone can upset this balance.
Maintain gentle hygiene. Using unscented soaps, breathable underwear, and staying hydrated supports your body’s natural processes.
Staying Fresh Every Day
Even though discharge is normal, it can sometimes feel uncomfortable or require a little extra protection. Lil Helper’s HyPs liners offer a reusable, breathable solution for everyday use. Made with soft bamboo and a stay-dry layer, they keep you feeling fresh without the waste and discomfort of disposable liners.
Jessica T., a regular HyPs user, shares:
"Everyday discharge has been my normal for years, especially postpartum. Disposable liners were uncomfortable, sometimes peeling or folding mid-day. HyPs changed everything. They’re soft, breathable, and I can carry a few discreetly in my purse. I feel comfortable and confident, even on long days out. I don’t worry about ruining my underwear anymore."

Takeaway
Vaginal discharge is a normal and healthy part of life, but understanding your patterns helps you stay comfortable and recognize potential issues. Remember, every body is different, and what’s normal for one person might not be for another.
If you’re unsure about changes in your discharge or notice any concerning symptoms, don’t hesitate to speak with your doctor.

This article is so important; I wish I knew any of this when I was a kid. I was terrified when I started my period bc I thought the discharge was some STI I had magically gotten without ever having even SEEN a naked person 🤣 When I finally asked the only female person in my life for advice, she told me it was “what happens when girls are aroused” which made me feel so confused and ashamed. It took years (literally until I was an adult) before I finally did my own research and found out that discharge is totally normal and part of a healthy body’s functions. I wish this was something people could talk about without attaching shame to it; would have saved me a LOT of anxiety way back when 🤣
