At Lil Helper, we are all about empowering waste free families. One big way to cute down on your environmental impact is by changing how you travel to work. So in the spirit of National Bike to Work Day, we invited Cranky’s Bike Shop to share some tips on getting started on a greener commute!
I’m originally from Buenos Aires, where walking can get you to your destination faster than driving. Biking for transportation has always been a big part of my life. I didn’t have a driver’s license until I moved to Edmonton. Once I moved, I realized I had to wait a year to get my license after getting a learner’s permit. While I was waiting for my license, biking was my only mode of transportation, even in winter!
My name is Fernando. 7 years ago, I joined a local bike shop in my town (Cranky’s Bike Shop) and since then I have been focusing on helping riders get the most out of their cycling experience.
The following information are tips that I learned in my life as a cyclist, and I would love to share with you.
Before You Bike to Work
Allow some time before heading out…. It’s not as easy as jumping in the car and going!
Check weather conditions before heading out, mornings can be a bit chilly while biking. Be sure to protect your ears, forehead, and hands. Ensure you dress in layers. A good indicator you are dressed correctly is feeling a bit chilly when you start riding. Once you get going, your body temperature will rise.
Air pressure is important to check! So, make sure you top up the tires before rolling out (tire pressure is indicated on the sidewall)
Before you ride, check your bike to make sure nothing is rattling, and away you go!
Getting the Right Gear
Matching gear to your personal cycling experience and goals can make biking a ton more fun and enjoyable!
Fenders will keep clothes free of rain, mud and trail debris.
Many new bikes will come with stock pedals. We recommend upgrading your pedals because their bearings are stronger, and a wider pedal makes it more comfortable to ride. Good pedals can also take pressure out of your saddle.
We recommend a bike rack to hold all your necessary items. Bike racks can usually hold up to 50 pounds and are a great way of transporting bulky items without using a backpack.
Ensure you have a reliable lock.
We also recommend being visible for daytime and nighttime commuting. We recommend getting daytime running front and rear lights to ensure you are visible to drivers.
For most shared trails in the Edmonton area, it is bylaw to have a bell.
Lastly, we recommend having a helmet. Did you know most helmets need to be replaced from between 3-5 years?

Google maps work the best for me, usually I select the option on how to get there by bike. Some of the bike computers have the map option as well.
