We’ve got a Wash Routine App that helps you perfect your wash routine.
If you're looking to get started, here’s our standard recommendation:
- Prep: Make sure any solid “stuff” is removed from the diapers, inserts, and liners before tossing them in the wash. Unsnap the inserts from the diapers.
- Pre-wash: Run a short cycle in warm water with the recommended amount of detergent (we suggest Tide Original to Line 1).
- Main wash: Do a Heavy Duty cycle (longest setting, max 140°F/60°C) with the appropriate amount of detergent, adjusting based on your load size. We recommend Tide Original.

We recommend line drying or hang drying your cloth diapers after each wash. But hey—life’s busy, and dryers are convenient. If you’re using one, tumble dry the inserts on medium heat.
For diaper covers, it’s best to skip the dryer when you can. The waterproof layer (PUL, or Polyurethane Laminate) is heat-bonded and can break down over time with high temps. The less heat it sees, the longer it’ll last.
If you do need to dry the covers, use low to medium heat. And if you’re drying inserts and covers together, pull the covers out after 10–20 minutes—they dry much faster since they don’t have absorbent layers.

Lil Helper diapers and inserts are fully absorbent straight out of the box—no prepping required. You can start using them right away.
We do recommend running a short wash cycle before first use to remove any dust that may have built up in the warehouse or during shipping. Use cold or warm water and only half the usual amount of detergent since the products are already clean. This quick rinse just freshens them up before they go to work.
For three days you would need 18 diapers (each diaper comes with a pair of charcoal inserts) and an additional 12 inserts.
Here’s a typical cloth diapering routine:
- Newborns typically go through 8-12 diaper changes a day—let’s use 10 changes as an average. As your baby grows, this number will decrease.
- Diaper covers can be reused at least twice before needing a wash. So each day, you’ll need 6 covers and 10 inserts.
- After 2 days, you’ll have 12 soiled diaper covers and 20 soiled inserts. While you’re laundering, you’ll still have 6 clean covers and 10 fresh inserts, ready for use the next day.
- For a 3-day routine, you’ll need 18 diapers and 12 additional inserts. Having a few extra diapers provides a little cushion.
- By day 4, your clean stash will be ready to go again!
There are lots of reasons that your diapers may have a smell. We need to figure out why they smell, fix it, and avoid repeating the problem. To figure out what is causing the smell, try our Stinky App.
